Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

I’ve only rarely sung this song in the many years since it was written, because I never thought it would be relevant again. But, in the light of one man’s bloody and woefully misguided decision to invade a peaceful, unthreatening neighbor, the song is, once again, a plea for our common humanity. For the brave Ukrainians fighting against this brutal tyranny and also the many Russians who are protesting this outrage despite the threat of arrest and imprisonment - We, all of us, love our children. Stop the war.

"To save the lives of more than 200,000 young American soldiers."
"Because there could be resistance from those who want to resist, and it was determined that if we prolonged the war any longer, the lives of young American soldiers would be at risk."
"But it was to save the lives of more than 200,000 young American soldiers..."
"No, that is not the case. It was all for protecting the lives of 200,000 American soldiers."
Now that I have translated in full this amazing story about an incredible Japanese woman warrior named Tamiko Hayashida, there are a couple of questions that come to mind. That is, would it have been possible, for a native, non-American Japanese woman to know the (1) death tolls of Hiroshima and Nagasaki put together, and (2) the contents of the secret Yalta accord between the U.S and Soviet Russia government, in the immediate aftermath of the war, on September 2, 1945.
Even in the victor nation such as the United States, we can rightly assume that military as well as diplomatic information pertaining to the war were privileged information that were controlled strictly under the need-to-know basis. What was told by Tamiko only came to be known years or even decades after the war.
It is indeed exhilarating to know, if as a historical fact, such woman did exist, who can be one of the very very few privileged native Japanese person who gets (1) invited to a White House reception and can (2) meet personally with the President of the United States, (3) lecture the incumbent U.S. President about the inhumanity and hypocrisy of the atomic bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and then (4) throw Mr. President as well as Secretary of War up in the air using Judo, our national pride. But glorifying over what can only be deemed as too-well-constructed fabrication of facts based on wishful thinking? I for one wouldn't want to keep on dreaming about such 'could-have-been' glorified moment in history.

And, by the way, don't take my word for it -- recently, more than 500 businesses, including giants like GM and Nike, issued a Climate Declaration, calling action on climate change “one of the great economic opportunities of the 21st century.” Walmart is working to cut its carbon pollution by 20 percent and transition completely to renewable energy. Walmart deserves a cheer for that. But think about it. Would the biggest company, the biggest retailer in America -- would they really do that if it weren't good for their business, if it weren't good for their shareholders?
Now, one thing I want to make sure everybody understands -- this does not mean that we're going to suddenly stop producing fossil fuels. Our economy wouldn't run very well if it did. And transitioning to a clean energy economy takes time.
When it comes to reducing the U.S. electric sector’s greenhouse gas emissions, efforts can succeed only if carbon-free nuclear energy plays a larger role in the nation’s electricity mix. That’s not simply the opinion of our industry.
“There is no debating this fact: Nuclear energy produces nearly two-thirds of America’s carbon-free electricity. As a nation, we cannot reach our energy and climate goals without the reliable, carbon-free electricity that nuclear power plants generate to power our homes, businesses and infrastructure.
“President Obama recognized this during the presidential campaign when he said, ‘It is unlikely we can meet our aggressive climate goals if we eliminate nuclear power as an option.’ Likewise, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz supports the expansion of nuclear energy to meet national energy and environmental imperatives.
“Nuclear energy must continue to be a major part of the nation’s energy portfolio if we wish to effectively reduce carbon emissions to protect the environment, and to expand our supply of reliable, affordable electricity. We look forward to working with the administration to help achieve these extremely important goals.”
